    Drama and Performing Arts

Portora is a specialist school in The Visual and Performing Arts. We give students opportunities inside and outside the curriculum to develop their creativity, understanding and appreciation of The Arts. Events include; Performing Arts Showcase at the Ardhowen, public performances at Castle Museums as part of Holocaust Memorial Day, theatre trips, Big Dance record attempt, dance and drama workshops with professionals. Our students have been commissioned by various organisations (Fermanagh Community and Safety partnership, FDC, Church of Ireland) to create DVD resources for use in Fermanagh and further afield, on such diverse issues as antisocial behaviour and teenage pregnancy.

Drama at Key Stage 3: Year 8, 9 and 10

Boys have 2 lessons per week in Year 8 and 10, which are taught in the drama studio with a specialist drama teacher. The engaging and exciting curriculum gives them a chance to:
  • explore text - play scripts, poetry, novels using a range of drama techniques
  • develop characters
  • build confidence
  • perform for an audience
  • work with others
  • communicate their ideas, feelings and thoughts
  • solve problems creatively

Drama at Key Stage 4: Year 11 and 12

GCSE drama is a very popular option choice at Year 11. It is currently taught as a twilight session after school from 3.30-5.30pm, one day a week. This enables girls from the Collegiate School to join the boys and form a collaborative learning environment. Students create 2 performances for assessment and take a written examination based on their practical understanding of two texts they have studied.

A Level Performing Arts at Key Stage 5: Year 13 and 14

A level Performing Arts is an applied subject which gives students the opportunity to develop their performance skills in a range of disciplines: drama, music, lighting, sound, stage management, design and direction. Its focus is very much based on equipping students with the necessary skills for the world of work, enabling them to build and develop a performance CV through a wide variety of performance experience across the two years. Our results are excellent, consistently achieving 100% A- C at AS and 100% A*-B at A2. Students go on to study a variety of subjects at University level; Acting, Musical Theatre, ICT and Business; Primary Teaching; English Literature; Art and Design; Marketing.
